That Which We Hold Dear

It is interesting to browse through a thrift store, estate sale, or garage sale. More than castoff purchases, these items tell a story of the people that sold the item and those that bought them. Items that once were deemed valuable enough to spend money on are now discarded as throwaways, as something not worthy of keeping. Human nature has an insatiable appetite for the biggest and the brightest, the latest and the greatest, but what happens when what we value changes or becomes old? I can't help but think that life is just a bit better when we learn to be content with what we have and hold dear the people around us, rather than the things we accumulate. Until then, I will gladly continue to hunt for treasures in other people trash!
